Edwin “Ed Koch” Maldonado Jr. is a multidisciplinary theater artist and educator from the South Bronx, now living in Austin, Texas. Born in New York City, Ed spent eight years as a professional actor and appeared on many commercials, movies, and TV shows ranging from “SesamIMG_7123e Street”, “The Cosby Show”, “Another World”, to “Reading Rainbow”. In college, he served as executive director of the Ebony Theater Ensemble at Vassar for two years, and worked as a student coordinator at the Poughkeepsie Program for Youth in the Performing Arts.

After moving to Austin, Texas, Ed began competing as a slam poet in 2010. He has represented Austin in 2012, 2013, and 2015 as a member and coach of the “B Sides” slam team. He lived in Buffalo, NY for a year, and competed as a team member and coach of Buffalo’s Pure Ink slam team, taking first place at the 2013 Empire State Regional Poetry Slam (Western NY), 2014 QEW Regional Poetry Slam (Ontario, Canada), and the 2014 Albany Word Fest Invitational Slam. He is one of the coaches and organizers for Austin’s “They Speak” youth slam team and is currently preparing for a 2016 poetry and workshop tour.
